Catch Me Daddy

If Ken Loach ever does film noir, the results might look a little like this highly original thriller set amongst the mean streets of Yorkshire. Leila is a young Pakistani girl who has run away from home and is living hand to mouth with her Scottish boyfriend.

Despite the circumstances, it's clear that Leila is enjoying the freedom to be herself, blissfully unaware that she is to be the target of an honour killing. What follows is a minor masterclass of character-driven storytelling and at times unbearable tension as the planning and relations of her would-be killers unravels in a maelstrom of unintended consequences.

Surrounding this chaotic sequence of events is the brooding beauty of the Yorkshire landscape, brilliantly captured in moments of transcendent ordinariness that suggest the peaceful life that is always just out reach for Leila and the other characters caught up in a feud they scarcely understand yet are bound by ritual to conclude.

The most heartbreaking moment comes when Leila finally confronts her father and we see see her complete the transformation from confident young woman to hysterical little girl who cannot understand why this is happening to her.

It's not an easy watch at times but the material is handled with such care and subtlety that I think this is a worthy addition to any list of uniquely British crime thrillers.
