Under the Skin

I doubt you'll see a more disturbingly beautiful film this year yet it's hard to label Jonathan Glazer's latest film with any of the superlatives that typically spring to mind. That in itself is probably a compliment since this is a film about sensing the world in a different way, through the eyes of an alien intelligence.

As an aesthetic experience, it definitely achieves this. For the last few days since seeing this film I've felt like my perceptive palate has been well and truly cleansed. Every ordinary sight and sound has a new, different clarity.

His marriage of the intensely ordinary with the extraordinarily unreal has a weirdly dissonant effect that is not always comfortable to endure but as a piece of cinematic art it touches the work of Jodorowsky's El Topo or Tarkovsky's Stalker.

A remarkable film that is destined to be as hated as it is admired.
