Example topics
Design to run
A service is only as good as the organisation's ability to keep running it. This topic looks at design as operations work, drawing on service and operations strategy. It asks why so many well-researched services fade once the project team leaves.
Frameworks and fashion
Agile, design thinking, working backwards, product teams: frameworks arrive, spread and fade in recognisable cycles. This topic uses management fashion theory to look at what happens when expert practice gets codified. It includes the times I've brought a framework into a new setting myself.
Shaping without shipping
Case studies usually end in success. Real practice includes leadership changes, mergers, funding cycles and reorganisations that end good work early. This topic is an honest look at strategy and design when the ground moves, and at what still counts as impact.
Discovery as evidence
Discovery is often treated as a design phase. At its best it produces evidence for boards and business cases to act on. This topic covers how to scope, run and report a discovery so it changes decisions.
Public sector perspectives
Government services are used by people under stress and run by teams with little room for error. This topic covers designing for cognitive load, research with people who rarely use digital services, and handing a service over well.
